A flash drive
It was a few years ago now when, after looking at one of the initial bunch of Flash drives, I commented that everyone should own one. Well, by now I wouldn't be surprised if everyone does. Prices have fallen as capacities have rocketed and the market seems well and truly saturated with devices from just about every corner of the globe and from manufacturers familiar and those not so familiar.

The advent of the DVD and the ever increasing capacity of hard drives means our files have got larger over time. Not much more than a decade ago you'd have been unlikely to be in possession of a file that wouldn't fit on a floppy disk, in fact a great many games shipped on a single floppy. Today it almost seems pointless trying to make proper use of any portable storage medium that can't carry at least as much as a CD does. Fortunately you can pick up a 1 Gigabyte Flash drive for under £15 today provided your needs are fairly simple but what if your needs are a little more demanding?

Kingston are veterans of the memory market with a history stretching back nearly two decades, while in 2005 they were ranked by iSuppli as the world's number-one memory module manufacturer for the third-party memory market. If, like me, you're wondering by now why they haven't taken the obvious step into the world of Flash based MP3 players then you're not alone though they do now have a PMP (Portable Media Player) in their portfolio in the shape of the K-PEX 100.

Kingston has a variety of Flash drives in their product catalogue but the unit I'm looking at today offers a few unique features, not least of which is a slim and compact design and 256-bit AES data encryption in hardware.
